Trend alert: Funky feature walls

Unless you’ve had a media free start to the year, you’ll know that feature walls are one of the HOTTEST interior trends for 2014. Having made big appearances on the ‘The Block’ and ‘Selling Houses Australia’, they’re also the in-thing internationally, with many bold examples on display at the recent Interior Design Show in Toronto, Canada.

At Picture Hanging Systems we are frequently involved in some amazing interior design projects, primarily because our hanging systems are installed as the finishing touch to protect expensive wall coverings or designs from damage. So from the very cutting-edge of interior design, here are five of the best examples of feature wall coverings that we’ve seen in recent weeks:

1. Wooden wallpaper

Made from high quality veneer this makes for a beautiful finish. There is a wide variety of wood species available from warm, soft tones to sharp, edgy dark woods, and more subtle, light timbers. Elton Group, based in Melbourne specialises in these finishes and have created the WoodWall range. The veneer and is applied in the usual way to plasterboard, plaster, mdf, particleboard and most wall types. WoodWall has a standard polyurethane finish or a gloss is available upon request, also this product is durable enough to follow curved walls, even a 1mm radius for corners in the grain direction.

2. Stone Wall cladding

Both charming and cool, Sareenstone’s range of sandstone, limestone or marble finishes provide the random uniqueness of natural stone whilst keeping within a colour range to subtly introduce texture and make a bold statement. It can also be used for exterior landscaping to help blend indoor and outdoor environments.

3. Wallpaper - Silk wallpaper

One of our favourites, silk wallpaper has a smooth, soft texture but creates a bold impression. Silk interiors have some very elegant designs. Have a look ‘Brick Wall wallpaper’ in grey, below and check out the more industrial ‘Brick wallpaper’ on their website.

4. Murals

Murals make a gutsy, bold statement and are a decision well worth the investment. Choose exactly the style you love, from simple Banksy-style stencils to custom designs by professional artists. The image below is by MetaGraphics, a specialist in custom murals.

5. MDF wave board panels

We recently fell for the texture of a MDF board panel installation on the client level of a lawyers office in Sydney. A dramatic alternative to traditional flat walls, they provide a range of architectural wall panels that bring excitement, energy texture and colour to your interior design.
